NEJM Knowledge + Pain Management and Opioids

The FDA Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) for opioids leverages accredited CE to adress the opioid crisis. In July 2012, the first REMS was approved by the FDA to incoprporate accredited CME into Extended-Release and Long Acting (ER/LA) Opioid Analgesics REMS.

Learning Objectives

  • Choose the most appropriate pain-management strategy for an individual patient.
  • Recognize scenarions in which opioid analgesia is and is not appropriate.
  • Recall the importance of routinely assessing pain, function, and adverse effectes in patienttaking chronic opioid therapy.
  • Identify signs of opioid misuse and opioid use disorder
  • Choose the most appropriate strategy for tapering or discontinuing opioid analgesics when necessary.
  • Choose the most appropriate intervention when opioid use is suspected.

Prerequisites

This is an adaptive self-assessment tool designed to adjust to the learner's strengths and areas for growth, and can be accessed from a desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone. Learners are presented with a sequence of questions. After each is answered, the user is provided with a key learning point, detailed feedback that discusses the correct anser as well as each of the wrong ansrs, and citations to relevant articles.
