Beyond Competence: Embedding Cultural Humility in Clinical Training

Program Description:

Beyond cultural competence, cultural humility emphasizes lifelong self-reflection, awareness of power dynamics, and authentic partnership-building. This session will encourage participants to examine perspectives, challenge assumptions, and strengthen inclusive practices in both clinical and educational contexts.

Learner Outcomes:

As a result of the presentation participants will be able to:

  1. Define cultural humility and distinguish it from cultural competence within clinical supervision
  2. Apply culturally humble strategies to real-world supervision scenarios in clinical education settings.
  3. Evaluate supervision practices for potential biases and develop approaches to foster belonging and trust in student learning.
  4. Identify strategies for supervising students in nursing and speech-language pathology that promote equity, inclusion, and respect for diverse population
  5. Collaborate across disciplines to strengthen interprofessional supervision grounded in humility and reflective practice.

Presenters:

Kimberly Ho, Ph.D. CCC-SLP (she/her) is a neurodivergent speech-language pathologist with specialty certification in Augmentative and Alternative Communication.  She is also a board certified behavior analyst and primarily serves Autistic individuals with minimal speech. Dr Ho is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Northeastern University.  She supervises graduate SLP students conducting AAC assessments and providing intervention.   Dr. Ho has published 6 articles in peer-reviewed professional journals related to communication support for people with severe disabilities. She has presented at 20 state, national, and international conferences on AAC, Autism, and Neurodiversity-affirming care.  

Nia I. Johnson, Ed. D., CCC-SLP (she/her) is the Assistant Program Director and Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northeastern University Charlotte. With over two decades of experience as a speech-language pathologist, Dr. Johnson brings a deep passion for equity and advocacy in communication access. She currently serves as the Community and Belonging Lead on the Charlotte campus, where she works to foster inclusive learning environments that elevate diverse voices and promote culturally responsive practices. Dr. Johnson is committed to preparing future clinicians to engage in meaningful care that uplifts marginalized communities and advances health equity in communication sciences.

Janet Monagle, Ph. D., RN, CNE, ANEF (she/her) has been a leader in nursing education for over 25 years. She is currently a clinical professor at Northeastern University. Since earning her PhD at University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth in 2012 Dr. Monagle has dedicated much of her research to advancing the science of nursing education in clinical judgment development and is part of a research team, focused on teaching and evaluating clinical judgment. In 2024 she was inducted into the NLN Academy of Nursing Education Fellows which celebrates individuals who have contributed to nursing education in sustained and significant ways.

Danielle Scott, Ph.D., CCC-SLP (she/her) is an Associate Clinical Professor at Northeastern University Charlotte in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders.  Dr. Scott is deeply committed to the work of justice, belonging, and liberation. Dr. Scott is a Northeastern University Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research (CATLR) Innovative Teaching Excellence Fellow for her work around inclusive, anti-oppressive teaching practices. Her research and scholarship pertain to cultural humility, therapeutic relationships, and social justice.

    Tanya Wilson Ed.D., CCC-SLP (she/her) is an Assistant Clinical Professor and Off-campus Clinical Coordinator at Northeastern University Charlotte and is an adjunct professor at West Coast University. Dr. Wilson is a national presenter on topics related to cultural humility, supervision, and counseling in speech-language pathology and has published in The ASHA Leader, Becoming a Culturally Humble Clinical Educator. She also serves as a journal reviewer for the Journal of Health and Wellness at West Coast University.

    Satisfactory Completion of Course Information
    Attendees need to attend the full presentation time to receive CE credit. This will be done via a sign-in and sign-out sheet for in person attendees and via a Zoom sign-in and sign-out for remote course participants. Course attendees will complete a post-presentation survey including a self-assessment of three areas of new learning implementation from the course.
